Many people enjoy playing video games. They like the fast paced action, the stellar graphics, and the well thought out game play. As video games become more popular, more and more people want to have careers in making them. Luckily, there are many different video game design careers, schools, and degrees that work to different strengths and weaknesses.
Which degree someone chooses depends largely on which are of video game design they would like to specialize int.
If this hasn't been decided, there are overall video game design degrees available. For example, Brown College in Minnesota has a Game Design and Development Bachelors degree. This is good for those that haven't figured out a specialization. In these degree programs, the student will learn about 2D and 3D art, level design, game theory, programming, game audio, and other things related to the video game design process.
Other times, people tend to know which area of video game designing they would like to work in. Artists tend to gravitate toward three dimensional modeling and animation. There are degrees at different colleges that specialize in three dimensional modeling and animation. It's better to choose a specialized animation degree than a general degree because a student will learn more about that specific subject. DigiPen Institute of Technology in Washington State has a degree program that teaches students game related modeling and animation.
Not everyone is an artist. Some people thrive at computer technology. If someone really likes math and is technically minded, then programming could be aright fit for them. Programming involves learning a code that controls all aspects of the game. There are two ways to go about getting a college education in this area. One way is to get a general programming degree. Most schools offer this kind of education, including state universities. This degree will teach many different programming languages.
The problem with a general programming degree is that is doesn't teach the programming in relation to video game design. If this is important to the student, than a video game design focused programming degree would be better. Full Sail, located in Florida, has a programming degree that is specific to video game design. This school is very popular and there are many famous video game programmers that attended the school. For example, Jameson Durall graduated from Full Sail. He now works for Electronic Arts and has worked on games such as The Godfather and Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath.
One of the things that will be learned in college is video game design software. Since almost all of the video game making process is done on computers, there is often a lot of software to learn. There are design software programs such as RPG Maker that makes the whole game in one program.
There are also programs that specialize in the different areas of video game designing. For example, 3D Studio Max and Maya are 3D modeling programs that animators use to make the art for video games. For programming, a lot of video game companies use Visual Studio for their programming needs. Since there are a lot of different design software programs to learn, it's imperative to attend school for game design. These degrees will teach the necessary programs for each area of video game design.
When considering video game design careers, make sure to search for schools that offer proper degrees. Whether the aim is to program or to create three dimensional characters, there are video game design careers and degrees for each aspect of the industry.
