When computers were originally invented, their primary purpose was work, math, word processing, etc. It didn't take long for computer users to begin creating games for their machines. The first computer gaming involved squares and rectangles that moved in very limited paths around the screen, or they were text based games that took gamers through fantasy scenarios similar to a choose-your-own story novel. Today, computer gaming is a vast multimedia experience that absorbs the player in life-like drama and action.

Whether someone owns a PC computer or a Mac computer, there are literally hundreds of thousands of games with every possible variation of theme and content that a player could ever want. Games involving everything from fantasy creatures in a Tolkien-esque world to gritty, realistic police games are just a click away.

When choosing computer games the most fundamental difference is the platform or operating system that a computer uses. PC computers generally operate on a Windows or Linux operating system, while Mac computers operate on an Apple based operating system. The capabilities of a machine will define how advanced a game can be.

If gaming is a passion, a player may choose any of hundreds of styles of gaming computers complete with cast video and audio capabilities. A gaming computer is specifically designed to bring out the complete gaming experience. Large monitors, surround sound speakers, and gaming controller attachments can turn a desktop computer into a gaming superstation.

After getting settled into gaming by themselves, serious gamers will often go to LAN parties. This is the gaming equivalent to a music festival in which everyone brings their own computer and hardwires the computers together in order to create a multiplayer environment. These LAN parties can range in size from a few friends in a living room to nearly 7,000 people in multiple hotel conference rooms. This is the ultimate in multi-player gaming.

Computer gaming differs significantly from a gaming system such as Wii or Genesis. A computer can work with any of the millions of games that are written for that platform, while gaming systems are restricted by only being able to use the games that exist for that gaming system. With computer gaming, players can buy games online, download, or go to their local brick and mortar store and buy them. Computer gaming is so common that games can be purchased at all of the large retail outlets and even in drug stores and book stores.

Online computer gaming is increasingly becoming popular with computer gaming fanatics. With high-speed Internet and improvements in graphics communication software, gaming online can be a fascinating and simple experience. A player can go to any of thousands of online computer gaming sites and either join the a game or download it to play it later.

Where computer gaming started as a simple distraction from spreadsheets and computer aided design, computer games have developed to the point that computer games are used for training purposes. The military, airlines, and defense contractors all use computers to train personnel and test new ideas. Computer gaming is also used to teach the disabled and to retrain people who are reentering the job market. Computer gaming is the basis for hundreds of vital applications that improve the lives and safety of thousands every day. The ultimate gaming computers fill rooms and are used to train astronauts and fighter pilots.

Computer gaming is one of the most frequent uses of home computers. The relative affordability of computers coupled with the ease of getting software into a gaming computer makes computer gaming one of the most accessible uses for a computer. And gamers will tell you, computer gaming is much more interesting than spreadsheets and email.
